Varnish on King

Varnish on King – 3.5/5

Located in the basement level on the Wellington Street end of King Street, Varnish is dimly lit and decked out in wood panelling. It is an American whiskey bar (no Japanese whiskey on the menu unfortunately), which also serves up quality eats.

We dropped in for lunch and picked to order separately, which, granted the waitstaff were right in advising against. The dishes are definitely share-plate style and next time I would prefer to order that way. There is an option to allow the kitchen to present enough food to cater for your group for $50 per person.

I tried the chunky corn fries, which were made of polenta and served alongside a delicious chutney and the tasty small lobster dog. The food was presented just like you’d expect in a fine dining restaurant right down to the great salt plate with three different flavours.

The restaurant was quiet during our mid-week lunch. I’m keen to visit again for dinner or a Friday night beverage.
