Shiro Izakaya

Shiro Izakaya (Invited Dinner) – 3.5/5

We generally avoid going out to dinner on Valentines Day. Restaurants are always busy, prices are inflated and service is rushed. However, when we received an invitation to try out Shiro at a discounted rate (we were provided with a 50% discount off our food bill), we jumped at the chance. We had a 9pm booking and as with all diners on the night, had a Valentines Day set menu (three courses and an amuse bouche, with two options for each).

As part of the Valentines Day theme, the tables were decorated with rose petals, a baby grand piano and jazz singer were playing in the corner and we were provided complimentary glasses of champagne.

We loved the fresh oyster, ikura, wasabi ponzu, ginger and pickled onion amuse bouche; and the entrees were delicious – a lobster and prawn salad with avocado, wasabi mayo, tobiko and yuzu vinaigrette and a raw wagyu beef and grilled Japanese mushroom dish. The chocolate mousse with plum sake was also a highlight.

The $90 set menu did unfortunately, leave us a little hungry, especially due to the small size of the sashimi main. During normal service, a tempting 8 course tasting menu is available for $95. Service is attentive and the beautifully fitted out restaurant overlooks a lit up Central Park.
