Felix Espresso
Felix Espresso – 4.5/5 Sitting down to a quiet breakfast before a day at work is a revelation. Sure, it takes a bit of pre-planning to roll out of bed that hour earlier, but when I was sitting in the serene Felix Espresso at 7am, I was more than happy for the early wake up. Alongside a perfect long macchiato, I tried the toast with a jug of @beeonethird honey and ricotta. Perched above street level on Burnett Lane, Felix […]

Irving Place
Irving Place – 4/5 On the Elizabeth Street level of The Wintergarden is Irving Place, a bright and shiny addition to the CBD. Perfect for a breakfast pitstop or for a casual lunch, the cafe boasts a short menu alongside strong coffees. Irving Place is found just around the corner from its sister store, Gramercy Coffee and possesses the same comfortable vibe and easy-going service. Wintergarden, 200 Edward Street, Brisbane

Mermaid Lounge
Mermaid Lounge – 4/5 Upstairs and through an unmarked door at Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall is the Mermaid Lounge – a bar that took a sea-faring theme to the nth degree. Rum and fresh cloudy apple juice is the choice up here. Get in early in the night to […]

John Mills Himself
John Mills Himself – 4/5 Hidden down a little laneway off Elizabeth Street, John Mills Himself is cosy and a great little escape from the city. Open Monday to Friday, it would make a perfect workday local. I stopped in for a long macchiato and a soft and salty pretzel. My coffee was a little thinner that I prefer but it was strong and full-flavoured. Service was casual and friendly. The cafe transforms into a bar from 4pm from Tuesday-Saturday also. […]
Bonsai Botanika
Bonsai Botanika – 3.5/5 Stepping into Bonsai Botanika is a feast for the senses. Three levels high and full of fake grass, wooden panelling and kitschy decor, it was quite overwhelming on our first visit. A tip for first visitors – order your coffees and the signature flourless chocolate cake downstairs and your ramen and beers upstairs. We ordered a long macchiato and a hot chocolate (and a beer!) and settled in to the cosy tables on level two. The hot […]
