Brika – 4/5 Greek food is one of my favourites – simple flavours and simple dishes, always prepared with care. Brika, in Northbridge, is homely and a lovely spot to share food among friends. You could easily while away the hours there. The Fremantle sardines, as expected, were delicious and accompanied by charred bread. We also loved the grilled octopus and the beetroot, haloumi, pomegranate and mint salad. 3/177 Stirling Street, Northbridge

Bills Bar and Bites – 4/5 Taking over the space that previously housed The Leederville, Bills is a great option for a quick nibble over drinks. Casual, comfortable and with just enough classiness, it lends itself to being somewhere to either start off a long night or a quiet afternoon catch up. The pig and chook terrine with piccalilli is perfect alongside a cocktail or two. 742 Newcastle Street, Leederville

Little Bird – 3.5/5 Situated on Northbridge’s quiet Lake Street, Little Bird is a sun-filled and quaint cafe. Featuring long benches on the footpath, a small courtyard by its side (be wary of the hungry crows which sent me scurrying indoors!) and plenty of small tables and couches – it’s a great place to get grab a coffee and get comfortable. Their breakfast and lunch menus are served all day, so I was lucky enough to try their granola for […]

Uncle Joe’s – 4/5 Snaring a table for Friday lunch on King Street can be difficult. @oldfaithfulbar had a forty-five minute wait; @laveencoffee, fifteen. Lucky for us, we squeezed into the last empty table at Uncle Joes. Skipping the delicious cakes this time (baked by the talented @charlotte_thebaker), we ordered the quesadilla, the breakfast burger and an amazing BBQ pork and slaw burger. The pulled pork was soft and so juicy – my burger was dripping in delicious saucy mess! […]
Core Cider House – 4/5 A short drive east of Perth is Pickering Brook, a lovely spot lined with farms and beautiful orchards. We pulled into Core for a light lunch and to try out a tasting tray of their five ciders. My favourite was the pear cider, named Peace Core, which we enjoyed alongside a deliciously oozy warm thyme and garlic infused Brie and a creamy rabbit and fig pate. I’d make the drive out just for that pate. […]

Aravina Estate – 4/5 We booked a table at Aravina on a weekend away in Margaret River. The venue is beautiful (it’s the old Amberley Estate) and the restaurant is huge. In summer, the balcony would be a perfect spot for lunch. We splurged on a three course lunch, with our table trying the Esperance scallops with pork belly; the Manjimup marron with brioche, apple and truffle; the pork terrine with Persian feta; the lamb neck pappardelle and the beef […]

Mechanics Institute – 4/5 We’ve always said that Perth’s weather lends to rooftop bars – it’s amazing there aren’t more of them. Mechanics Institute is our favourite choice for outdoor beverages, perched above William Street. Order a burger from Flipside (or maybe one of their Bloody Marys which comes topped with a slider!) and settle in for some people watching and fun tunes. Entry is via the back laneway. 222 William Street, Northbridge

Stimulatte – 4/5 On hearing that Stimulatte is now open on Saturday mornings, I headed to Subiaco to finally try out their breakfast fare. An oasis on Hay Street, it is easy to spot on the otherwise quiet street. Dining alone, a perched myself on the sunny bench in the window to have my creamy coffee and the very filling (but moreish!) Mexican black beans, poached egg and rye bread. The options are varied and definitely warrant another visit to […]
