Bonsai Botanika
Bonsai Botanika – 3.5/5 Stepping into Bonsai Botanika is a feast for the senses. Three levels high and full of fake grass, wooden panelling and kitschy decor, it was quite overwhelming on our first visit. A tip for first visitors – order your coffees and the signature flourless chocolate cake downstairs and your ramen and beers upstairs. We ordered a long macchiato and a hot chocolate (and a beer!) and settled in to the cosy tables on level two. The hot […]

Ohnamiya
Ohnamiya – 4/5 On looking for a casual dinner option South of the river, we were recommended Ohnamiya in Myaree. Situated in a small complex alongside Asian restaurants and a grocer (and a novel karaoke and bubble tea joint!) it is a place we would have never stumbled upon ourselves. We picked a range of dishes to share amongst the four of us. The karaage, agadashi tofu and large sashimi plate were all tasty and great value. Most dishes are […]
Sushia
Sushia – 4.5/5 We first visited Sushia almost a year ago, just a week after it opened and loved every minute of it. With high expectations, we returned on Friday night and were thankfully, not at all disappointed. We arrived after work and were met with a very busy bar area (mirroring most of the venues in the Brookfield Place precinct) and the entire dining area of restaurant was full by 7pm. Alongside tall bottles of Ebisu beer, we shared […]
Shiro Izakaya
Shiro Izakaya (Invited Dinner) – 3.5/5 We generally avoid going out to dinner on Valentines Day. Restaurants are always busy, prices are inflated and service is rushed. However, when we received an invitation to try out Shiro at a discounted rate (we were provided with a 50% discount off our food bill), we jumped at the chance. We had a 9pm booking and as with all diners on the night, had a Valentines Day set menu (three courses and an amuse […]
Dosukoi
Dosukoi – 4/5 I love ramen. I love slurping down the soft noodles and I love the complex soup they swim in (Did I tell you about that time I went to the ramen museum in Osaka?….). Add in a gorgeous little manga filled shop and I’m in Japanese lunchtime heaven. We chose the number 1 and the number 5 – the Japanese original and original with crispy prawn gyoza. The soup was delicious and the serve was just the […]
Ginga
Ginga – 4/5 Ginga in Emporium is a great lunch venue. Catering to many options it will solve the, ‘where should we go??’ dilemma. The huge space boasts a sushi train, yum cha dishes and Japanese bentos and donburi options. I’m a big fan of their eel-don – loads of sauce and a generous serving of eel. I can never finish it! 1000 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley

New Shima
New Shima – 3.5/5 Located on Murray Street, close to Shafto Lane, New Shima is an unassuming Japanese restaurant. Sparsely decorated, it specialises in a small range of Donburi, bentos and sushi. Lured in by their discounted lunch special, I came to try their chicken teriyaki bento with a serve of gyoza for $9.50. The gyoza were fried, crunchy and delicious. The bento was generous and loaded with lots of teriyaki sauce to match the huge portion of chicken. You […]
Sushia Sushi Roll & Fresh Bar
Sushia Sushi Roll & Fresh Bar – 3.5/5 A tip for all you Sushia lovers, they have a take away sushi store across the road from their restaurant in the Enex100 centre. Located in the bottom level next to Woolworths, it will give you a fix until you can plan another amazing dinner in the restaurant! My sushi roll was $3.50 and pretty tasty. Boxed sushi is also available. 16 Gordon Street, West Perth
Tenkadori
Tenkadori – 4/5 I can’t believe I’ve found another great Japanese restaurant. It seems that Perth is a little spoilt for choice! Tenkadori is in Subiaco, next door to Double Double. Their specialty is yakitori and their open kitchen allows views of the little char grillers. We had delicious lightly battered chicken karaage, takoyaki, edamame and renkon chips. Servings are generous and perfect for sharing. Service is friendly and efficient. 502 Hay Street, Subiaco
